Canterbury is New Zealand's largest region by area located on the eastern coast of the South Island. Away from the coast, the region is surrounded by the Canterbury Plains which in turn are predominantly bordered by the Southern Alps.
Canterbury is the prime producer in New Zealand of cereal crops such as wheat, barley and oats - all grown in the fertile soils of the Canterbury Plains. The main city of the region - Chritstchurch, New Zealand's second largest city - is known as the Garden City. Christchurch suffered two devastating earthquakes in 2011 and 2012 but is today emerging as a vibrant city - focussing on rebuilding a better, more sustainable, city.
All year round there are a variety of activities for you to do in Canterbury. There are a number of ski fields within the region for winter recreation, and Kaikoura (the whale watch capital of the south) and Akaroa (the historic French settlement) are also great day trips. The local naturist club is the perfect place to base yourself while you explore the region.
