Because of the large area of Canterbury, it is divided into three smaller regions for many functions and reasons. North Canterbury is the area northwards from Rakaia River and encompasses Christchurch city; Mid Canterbury goes from Rakaia River south to the Rangitata River; and South Canterbury is the area from Rangitata River southwards to the Waitaki River which borders neighbouring Otago region.
South Canterbury hosts a variety of outdoor activities - from skiing and golf; hunting, fishing and 4WD; mountain biking and horseriding; to hiking and rafting. But there are also a lot of things for those who like the more relaxed getaway - like markets and garden tours; or heritage, art and culture.
There is a naturist club and a naturist farmstay - the perfect place to base yourself while you explore this interesting region.
